Match2Vote organizes civic information using a layered structure that separates election information, interpretation, and sourcing.
Structure:
Elections → Issues → Policies → Candidate Positions → Sources
Information comes from publicly available, nonpartisan sources, including:
official government election data
candidate websites and published policy statements
voting records and official filings where applicable
Candidate positions are represented using candidates’ own words whenever possible. When information is unavailable or unclear, it is labeled as such rather than inferred, ensuring transparency in voting alignment.
After completing the survey, users enter their voting location. This allows Match2Vote to display relevant election information, including elections and candidates that align with their ballot preferences and candidate positions.
The prototype currently supports:
- federal elections
- select state elections
Support for local elections is being evaluated based on data availability and consistency.
Using publicly available election information, Match2Vote compares a user’s stated priorities with candidate positions. The app highlights: areas of alignment, areas of difference, and areas where information is unavailable. In some views, this comparison is expressed as a voting alignment percentage. This reflects issue overlap only and does not account for character, experience, or electability. The purpose of this feature is to make alignment visible, not to tell users how to vote.
Users can save elections and candidates to a personal voting plan, which serves as an organizational tool rather than a recommendation engine. This feature allows users to keep track of selected and undecided races, revisit issues later, and prepare for Election Day without the pressure of finalizing every choice. By doing so, they can ensure their voting alignment with candidate positions and stay informed with relevant election information.
Privacy is a core design principle. We ensure that no personal data is collected, including any election information related to candidate positions. Survey responses are not stored, and no user accounts are created. Additionally, there is no tracking or profiling used, allowing for a seamless voting alignment experience.
